Science Probes for the iPad

Science is one of those subjects that really excite students because they get to see cause and effect, they get to create, record and then document results and they get to manipulate the variables that produce the data. Students then get to make connections between what they do and the real world.
Add an iPad, a series of carefully chosen apps and a couple of probes and you can make all of these observations happen in a mobile environment - outside, at home or even on an excursion. I would love to be a student in a classroom with these tools!
iSeismometer: FREE
iSeismometer stores 10 seconds of data and you can drag the screen to re-track the previous data. Submit data on the website with your location info. You can also customize the target URL. Send the URL to your email address so that you can easily download the data as csv file.

Accelerometer Data Pro: $2.99 and $5.49
The Pro version saves the collected data on the Flash file system of the device allowing a very large amount of data to be collected, and allows the data to be accessed after the application is restarted. The Accelerometer Data application gives you direct access to the iDevice accelerometer data. The data can be streamed to your computer using UDP over wifi.

iCelsius with Probe attachment ( 4 models between $50 - $100)
iCelsius: FREE + Probe
iCelsius is a temperature probe that turns the iPad into a digital thermometer. The app will read the temperature, create graphs and set up alerts. The iCelsius measures temps between -22°F to 158°F (-30°C to 70°C) and is suited for many applications.

Oscium Osilloscope Probe attachment $298
IMSO-104 Osilloscope: FREE + Probe
The Oscium scope can also do all of those things you would expect from any scope: triggering, running measurements, the ability to freeze the display, screen shot, data capture, e-mail, and configuration saving. The unit supports a single analog probe and four digital probes, all included in the kit.

Aquascope for Kids to Explore Water

Educational Insights Nancy BS Science Club Aquascope

Contents:

  • 1 Aquascope
  • 1 Interactive activity journal

Design:

The product design for the Aquascope is brilliantly child friendly. The Aquascope is a nice large tubular device with a base color the green. There is fun underwear designs including fish and shells in a nice delicate white illustration. To top it off, the details are in a nice shade of purple. Very child friendly and pretty.

Use:

The best part of the Aquascope is that it makes exploring science fun. Bring your little one to a body of water. Although a lake is best as there is more to see, yes this can be used with saltwater as well. I know this is amazing. Once you have arrived let your little one explore.

All the child has to do is place the base of the Aquascope in the water and focus using the telescoping lens. It has three different layers so it can really get close up to nature. It this is not cool enough, let your child use the light feature. Not all bodies of water have direct sunlight. Just click the green button and the Aquascope will shine a beam of light on your new underwater discoveries.

The best part of the Aquascope is the ability to take it part. Nothing is waterproof. And yes one of my girls did drop this in the water. At first I thought we really broke it, but when we took it part, it was dry a day later. Great feature as this is used both around water and with kids.

Pros:

  • Allows kids to closely explore underwater science
  • The journal helps guid the child
  • The light helps bring detail to the big underwater world
  • Colorful
  • Fun
  • Child friendly
  • Can be taken apart and cleaned

Cons:

  • Focusing can be a little difficult for a younger child. The telescoping feature is not as sturdy as I would like so you need one hand on the base of the Aquascope and another hand for focusing. Older kids usually can do this issue free.

Suggestions:

  • If you do not have a body for water, create one. Fill a portable pool or bathtub with water. Place some toys that will not float on the bottom of the pool and let your child explore. It will be fun for you child while he is learning all about focal distance.
  • When you are by a body of water like a stream or an ocean, without using the activity journal, ask your child to use his own words to talk about what he sees. He will be surprised by all the different things under the water and expressing them will be a great verbal season.

Bottom Line:

The Aquascope is a lot of fun. Kids are often exploring the world they live in, that the water world can be left out. Kids will be surprised by not only seeing different fish and rocks, but there is a whole new wold left to be discovered. As a toy, this is fun but the education that will come from it is well worth the investment.

Visual Timers for your iPad Classroom

Students do not always have a great sense of time and many of my students over the years have miscalculated the time remaining on a particular task or assessment piece. This is a skill that they develop over time but not without some devastating consequences. These visual timers are exceptionally good for visual learners but work just as well for all the students in your class. Start to generate better time management in your class with the use of one or more of these visual timers.

Visual: $0.99 AU
Visual is a visual countdown timer. Know how long you have left with a simple glance. With Visual, the passage of time is presented through the changing of your screen colour. Time remaining is communicated like traffic lights. Green means lots of time left. Yellow half. And red means its time to wrap it up.

TicoTimer: $0.99 AU
Tico Timer is a visual timer for children. Select from ten different types of countdown available, from disappearing squares to a shrinking circle, and it will tell your students - in a visual way - how much time there is left. Tico Timer is a great way for developing the sense of time in small children.

The VisTimer was developed to provide a gentle implementation of time imposed limits. It utilizes an animated shrinking pie chart to depict elapsed time. Visual thinkers often have difficulty conceptualizing time. Being able to see the changing pie chart as time passes makes it easier to understand time.

Timer Visual 1.0: $0.99 AU
Do you have students who have difficulty understanding the concept of time? Time can be an abstract idea, this can generate anxiety in people that do not have the ability to calculate the amount of time for left to complete an activity. Timer Visual helps to solve this problem by providing visual clues.
